Why Atouguia da Baleia? What I Can Visit in this Village? Discover in this article!
Atouguia was, in the Middle Age one of the most important sea ports of Portugal. Says the legend that the designation Touguia came from, the fact that herds of wild taurus were very common here.
Frei Fernando da Soledade narrates in his History of “Ordem de São Francisco of Portugal” that in the year of 1526 a big wale was washed ashore, in a place called “Areia Branca”.
Inside the S. Leonardo Church we still exhibit a petrified rib of a big wale.
